Virginia Mae Rush Veney, 72, of Broadway, VA, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 22, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Virginia was born February 10, 1954 in New Market, VA, the daughter of the late William Aubrey Rush and Betty Jane Rush.
Virginia attended Broadway High School, graduating in 1972.
Virginia spent most of her early adult life working for Kennametal in New Market, VA making many lasting friendships during her time there. After leaving Kennametal in 1991, Virginia had a brief stint in home child care before joining Rockingham County Public Schools as a bus driver and paraprofessional as a classroom assistant. In 2019 She retired from RCPS with over 20 years of service, to become a fulltime “NeNe.”
On December 2, 1983, she married the love of her life, James Ricardo Veney (Smokey), who preceeded her in death on September 8, 2023.
Virginia will be remembered as a woman who lived out her faith in God. Over the years, she became known as a prayer warrior often spending hours praying for family and friends. She was a selfless woman who routinely put others needs ahead of her own. Aside from her faith, her family was what was most important to her and what she was most proud of. She dedicated most of her life to supporting her three boys in all their endeavors and then becoming her grandchildren’s biggest fan.
In addition to dedicated attendance at church and spending time with her family, Virginia looked forward to attending regular gatherings at local restaurants with her fellow classmates of BHS, former co-workers at Kennametal, and a group of close friends.
Virginia is survived by three sons, Kevin Rush and wife, Kim, of Broadway, Josh Veney and wife Missy, of Timberville, and J.D. Veney of Broadway; a sister, Linda Cubbage of Stanley, a brother, William E. Rush and wife Brenda Crider; ten grandchildren, Ashley, Ross and wife Arwen, Mason and fiancé Haley, Kendall, Aiden, Carter, Breeana, Macy, Lydia, and Aspenn; and nine great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the nursing staff of Sentara Hospice Services for their support and care of Virginia over the last few months.
