Verna Greaser

–

Harrisonburg, Virginia

Verna Faye (Garber) Greaser, 97, of Harrisonburg, died October 12, 2026, at Wenger House, Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (VMRC).

Verna was born on October 8, 1929, in Jackson, Minnesota, to the late Lloyd and Nettie Garber. On April 15, 1949, she married Earl Greaser, who preceded her in death in 2003.

Known affectionately as Mom, Grandma, Great-grandma, Vernie, Verna Faye, and Verna, she was a homemaker with a gift for hospitality. In addition to raising their five children, Verna and Earl welcomed many people into their home, sharing warmth and generosity with family, friends, and guests. She enjoyed quilting and baking and later worked as a bookkeeper and receptionist at Maple Lawn Homes, Eastern Mennonite College, and Heritage Haven, VMRC.

Verna never lost her sense of humor or her concern for the well-being of others. Her caring spirit and thoughtful attention to those around her were hallmarks of her life.

Verna’s faith was an important part of her life. She was a longtime member of Lindale Mennonite Church, where she enjoyed participating in Women’s Fellowship. She regularly journaled about her life experiences. In one entry, she expressed her prayer for her family, in-laws, and grandchildren: that they would remember her as “someone sent from God who dearly loved them and the Lord.”

Verna is survived by her five children: Sheri (Jay) Hartzler of Harrisonburg; Edie (Grant) Nebel of Phoenix, Arizona; Rita (Jim) Eby of Harrisonburg; Leon (Treva Hartman) Greaser of Wichita, Kansas; and Alan (Jeannie Brunk) Greaser of Goshen, Indiana. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Peter Garber, and her sister, Rosalie Stoltzfus.

Verna will be cremated with a private burial in Lindale Cemetery. A worship service celebrating her life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 28, at Lindale Mennonite Church, 6255 Jesse Bennett Way, Linville, Virginia. Live streaming of the service will be available on the Lindale Mennonite Church YouTube page. Visitation and a meal will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VMRC Compassion Fund at vmrc.org/donate.
