Samuel Jarrels "Sam" Flook Obituary (1954

Samuel Jarrels "Sam" Flook, 63, lifelong resident of Harrisonburg, passed away on Monday, September 18, 2017 at his home after an 18-month battle with Kidney Cancer. Sam was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, cousin and friend to many who knew him. He was born on March 8, 1954 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Samuel Walton and Mary Frances (Jarrels) Flook. Sam is an alumnus of Broadway High School, James Madison University and Eastern Mennonite University. He retired from Merck & Company in 2013 where he worked for more than 30 years. He started as an operator before becoming a supervisor and later was a Senior Automation Engineer and a Telecommunications Specialist. In his retirement, Sam also worked as a consultant for Merck; Rockingham County Schools and Dick Myers Auto Group. He was a former member of the Fellowship United Methodist Church and Linville United Methodist Church and was currently a member of the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren. On April 10, 1976, Sam married the former Connie Sue Ritter who survives. He and his wife were proud supporters of JMU Athletics and held season tickets to both the football and basketball teams from 1975 to the present. Sam was a true follower of Christ and led each day with a quiet dignity. He is known to many for his sense of humor and kindness toward all. Sam is also survived by two children, Jennifer Hansen and husband Christopher of Coral Springs, Florida; Christian Flook and girlfriend Taylor Murphy of Fairfax, VA; and a grandson, Luke Hansen. In addition to his parents, Mr. Flook was preceded in death by a son, Matthew Flook; and a sister, Mary Alice Flook. A celebration of Sam's life will be held on Sunday, October 8th at 3:00 pm at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren with Pastor Glenn Bollinger officiating. His body was cremated and burial will be held privately at Fellowship United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends now in their home and following the service on October 8.
