Michael D. Augsburger Obituary (1953 - 2017)

Michael D. Augsburger, 63, passed on April 11, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Michael was the son of Myron and Esther Augsburger of Harrisonburg. He is survived by his parents, his daughter Caitlin White of Charlottesville, brother John Augsburger, sister Marcia Augsburger, and niece, Lara Lyko. Michael graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School and Eastern Mennonite College, and focused on art in studies abroad. Michael co-created, with his mother Esther Augsburger of Harrisonburg, the massive sculpture, "Guns Into Plowshares," which has stood as a symbol of non-violence in front of police headquarters and the evidence control facility in Washington D.C. since 1997. An avid pilot, Michael once flew planes nationwide to detect cable signal leaks. His adventurous spirit took him around the world more than once. He spent 3 months ministering to people in India with his uncle Paul Kniss, now of Harrisonburg, and several months in Haiti and Indonesia working in humanitarian relief with his brother John. Michael started his work in construction at the age of 15 when he and John built a duplex in Park View. Over time, Michael built numerous custom homes and apartment buildings, on his own and with Augsburger Construction. He went on to head many construction projects, including student housing for JMU and Virginia Tech, working with S.M. Nichols Builder, Inc. During his rich and full life, Michael enjoyed flying, sailing, diving, photography, playing with a bluegrass band, and spending time with and talking about his beautiful and gifted daughter Caite. After retirement, Michael spent much of his time in Thailand, teaching English, walking the beach, and enjoying strong and supportive friendships. Upon his return to Harrisonburg, he succumbed to cancer. He will be remembered by his many friends and extended family for his kindness, unique wit, deep intellect, artistic talent, and great hair. Park View Mennonite Church will be open for the funeral visitation on April 19, 2017, beginning at 12:30 p.m., with services at 2:00 p.m., followed by a light meal in the fellowship hall.
