Lurty Everett Sampson Jr. Obituary (1927 - 2023)

Lurty Everett Sampson Jr., 96, a recent resident of Bellaire at Stone Port, passed away on Sunday, November 26th, 2023. Lurty spent most of his life living in Clover Hill in the home he built for himself and his wife Goldie. Mr. Sampson was born on March 5, 1927 in Harrisonburg and was the son of the late Lurty Everett Sampson Sr., and Maude Elizabeth Trainer Sampson. Lurty was a WWII Veteran serving two years in the Army stationed in Italy. He had a strong work ethic and held many jobs in his lifetime with his longest career being a truck driver for Smith Transfer. Lurty was a master craftsman and spent his time outside of work in his workshop "down at his barn" making furniture, birdhouses, and other home decor. Lurty could make a pattern from anything he saw and enjoyed making items to decorate his home and to give to his children and grandchildren. His other hobbies included square dancing, playing Bingo, the lottery, and entering Publishers Clearinghouse sweepstakes. He also enjoyed going to auctions trying to find that treasure in a "box and contents" he had bid on. He was a strong, silent giant of a man who will be greatly missed by all who loved him. On December 24, 1972, he married Goldie Virginia Nieswander Sampson, his wife of 51 years, who survives. Also surviving is a son, Gary Sampson and wife Karen; stepchildren, Thomas Alan Dove and wife Karen, Steven Wayne Dove and wife Melissa, Richard Eugene Dove; three grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his son, Ronald Sampson; his siblings, Harold Sampson, Raymond Sampson, Nelson Sampson; and a stepsister, Jeanie Persinger. Pastor Sarah Bailey will conduct a funeral service on Friday, December 1st, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Those wishing to view and sign the register book may also stop by on Thursday, November 30th from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
