I.J. Armstrong

Ira Jared “I.J.” Armstong, 87, a resident of Rockingham, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Bridgewater Home.

Mr. Armstrong was born on August 27, 1937, in Doe Hill, to the late Byron Jared and Ava Zimmerman Armstrong. He retired from Shenandoah Manufacturing and took great pride as a lifelong farmer. As an avid hunter, I.J. especially enjoyed the time spent at their cabin in Highland County. He was an Associate Member of Singers Glen Volunteer Fire Company and a member of Greenmount Covenant Brethren Church.

On May 13, 1967, he married Arnetta Kay Byerly Armstrong, who preceded him in death on May 31, 2023.

Surviving are his children, Mike Armstrong and wife Jennifer, Matt Armstrong and wife Heather, all of Rockingham; grandchildren, Clayton Armstrong and fiancé Julia Deavers, Julie Armstrong and fiancé Patrick Sullivan, Laurel Armstrong, and Ansley Armstrong; siblings, Ruth Helen Howdyshell and husband Ryland, of Mt. Solon, Mary Lou Miller of Bridgewater; and a sister-in-law, Jean Armstrong, of Bridgwater.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by his siblings, Byron Harold Armstrong and Elizabeth Ann Diehl.

Pastor Scott Harris will conduct a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at Greenmount Covenant Brethren Church. Burial will be held privately.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 17, 2025 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home.
