Herman Theodore "Ted" Mitchell Obituary (1933 - 2017)

Herman Theodore Mitchell Bridgewater Herman Theodore "Ted" Mitchell, 83, of Bridgewater, passed away on Monday September 11, 2017 at the Sentara RMH Medical Center. Mr. Mitchell was born on November 11, 1933 in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Perry and Vergie Mae (Cubbage) Mitchell. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After he returned from the war, Theodore worked for Hilltop Grocery as a meat cutter. He then worked for Dickson's Drug and Food Lane for 36 years as manager and meat cutter. In 1996 Theodore went to work as a custodian at Wilbur S. Pence Middle School. He was a member of Greenmount Church of the Brethren and a longtime member of the Melrose Church of the Brethren where he served as a Sunday school teacher and song leader. Mr. Mitchell was a tenor singer with the Valley Four Quartet for a number of years. On March 22, 1957 he married the former Louise Moyers who survives. In addition to his wife, Theodore is survived by a daughter, Jody Dawn Shifflett of Bridgewater; four sons, Lynn Allen Mitchell and wife Cara Beth of Bridgewater, Timothy Clay Mitchell and wife Renae of Bridgewater, Daniel Brice Mitchell and wife Carla Jo of Bridgewater, Joseph Lee Mitchell of Mt. Sidney; three brothers, Leon H. Mitchell and wife Beverly of Harrisonburg, Clyde E. Mitchell of Broadway, John E. Mitchell and wife Cathy of Elon College, NC; he was blessed with eight grandchildren, Michael Mitchell and wife Chasity, Kristina Mitchell, Candace Stephenson and husband Chris, Kellie Jo Mitchell, Taylor Shifflett, Jordan Shifflett, Benjamin Shifflett, Brooklynn Mitchell; and two great-grandsons, Jackson and Gabriel Mitchell; and one brother-in-law, Orvin Hottinger. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Berniece Hottinger, Lillian Lohr and husband Trovilla, Ina Johnson and husband Clarence, Roxie Nesselrodt, and husbands James Strawderman and Tommy Nesselrodt; and two brothers, Otis "Jack" Mitchell and Robert Mitchell and wife Betty. The funeral service will be held on Friday September 15, 2017 at 11 AM Greenmount Church of the Brethren with Pastor Roger Dove officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 PM at the McMullen Funeral Home.
