Dr. Harlan Lloyd Mast Obituary (1950 - 2023)

Harlan Lloyd Mast, M.D., 73, a resident of Penn Laird, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at his home. He was born on June 9, 1950, in Lancaster, PA, to the late Melvin Sauder and Amy Joyce Taylor Mast. Harlan grew up on the Mast family dairy farm in Lancaster, PA. In his youth, he enjoyed woodworking and carving, and loved the horses he bought and cared for. He graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School in 1968 and moved to Virginia in 1969 to fulfill selective service requirements at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA. He graduated from Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg, VA, in 1977, with a B.S. Degree in Biology, before receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1984 from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. After completion of his Internal Medicine residency at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA, and Polyclinic Medical Center in Harrisburg, PA, in 1988, he became Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. Following one year of Internal Medicine practice in Harrisonburg, he moved to Michigan, where he practiced Emergency Medicine for 27 years, valuing each patient entrusted to his care. He retired in 2016 and returned to Virginia to spend his retirement years near family. Over the years, he enjoyed collecting and listening to music, especially classical and sacred music. He also found joy in working with plants and tending to the landscape. His love was all inclusive, kindhearted, and his life and hope were grounded in his faith. On April 3, 1971, he married Evelyn Yvonne Shank, who survives. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Weston Lloyd Mast, brother-in-law, David Ethan Miller; and two nephews. In addition to his wife, Harlan is survived by his son, Jerrel Harlan Mast, and wife Minh-Huyen Nguyen, of North Yarmouth, ME; siblings, Harold Richard Mast, and wife Ruth, of Lancaster, PA, twin brother Herbert Lynn Mast, and wife Rhoda, of Narvon, PA, Susan Lois Mast Dick, and husband Delbert, of Mountain Lake, MN; brothers and sisters-in-law, Arneda Faye Shank Steiner, and husband Glenn, of Dalton, OH, Joseph Geil Shank II, and wife Sue, of Broadway, VA, Fern Shank Miller of Rockingham, VA, Nelson Lionel Shank, and wife Barbara, of Stuarts Draft, VA, Charles Samuel Shank, and wife Amei, of Broadway, VA; numerous nieces and nephews and their children. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 3, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene with Pastors Joe Stoner and Jim Harrison officiating. Burial will be held privately.
