Gifford Lee Payne Obituary (1929 - 2009)

Gifford L. Payne, 80 Gifford Lee Payne, 80, a resident of 8660 Payne Hollow Lane, Singers Glen, died December 29, 2009. Mr. Payne was born on April 14, 1929 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Clarence and Virginia Stella Morris Payne. He retired from Owens-Brockway in 1991. On May 14, 1947 he married the former Mabel F. Grandle who survives. Also surviving are five children, Charles ?Sonny? Payne and wife Kathy of Singers Glen; Gary Payne and wife Linda of Linville; Floyd ?Joe? Payne and wife Joanne of Broadway; Connie Walters; Kenneth ?Gene? Payne both of Singers Glen; two brothers, Nelson Payne of Linville and Warren ?Buster? Payne of Broadway; one sister, Faye Woodell of Linville; sixteen grandchildren and twenty eight great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Mr. Payne was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters, Clarence ?Conrad? Payne, Mary Newland, Charles Payne and Myrtle Payne. Pastor John Schaefer and Wendell ?Sonny? Henkel will conduct a funeral service on Friday, January 1, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening at the funeral home from 7 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Singers Glen Rescue Squad, P.O.
