D. Russell Myers Obituary (1915 - 2009)

D. Russell Myers, 93 Singers Glen D. Russell Myers, 93, died September 29, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He had been a resident of Crestwood at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. Mr. Myers was born on October 30, 1915, at Singers Glen, and was the son of the late Jacob C. and Ursula Davis Myers. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Myers worked at Shenandoah Manufacturing and retired from Walker Manufacturing after 18 years. He was a skilled machinist who enjoyed working in his shop and inventing mechanical devices to solve problems. He was a founding member of the Singers Glen Fire Department, a member of the Singers Glen Ruritan Club for over 41 years and served as the trustee and caretaker of the Singers Glen Cemetery for many years. He was a lifelong member of the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church, he joined the church in 1927, but his name was listed on the churches cradle roll when he was an infant and he remained an active member throughout his life. He taught Sunday School and was the chairman of the trustees for many years. In 1940, he married the former Edna Hinkel who preceded him in death in 1967. He married the former Lois Fern Swank who preceded in death in 2004. Surviving are nephews, Harry L. Hoover, Ted Hoover, Karol Messick, John Garrison, Clarence Garrison, and Mark Garrison; nieces, Karen Burke, Carole Gaines, Bernadette Simmons, Susan Huffman, Louise Detamore, Judy Tacke, Sandra Elliott; sister-in-law, Ava Gowl, and Wilda Garrison; a number of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. Mr. Myers was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley M. Hoover, and brothers Oliver B. Myers, Cleo L. Myers, and an infant brother Jacob Sidney Myers. Reverends Michael Frank, and Jim Radford will conduct a funeral service Saturday afternoon at 1p.m. at the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Singers Glen Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from seven until eight at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Singers Glen Fire Department, P.O.
