Charles "Monk" Miller

Charles James “Monk” Miller, 91, a resident of Hinton, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Mr. Miller was born on April 12, 1935 in Newport News and was a son of the late Charles Clifford and Margarette Shaw Miller.

He served in the United States Army. Monk was known for his honesty, hard work and was a steadfast presence in the community. He regularly read the local newspaper, enjoyed watching sporting events and remained committed to the Salvation Army throughout his life. While his primary career was as a car mechanic, his shop also served as a social hub where people could swap stories. He was a life member of Clover Hill Fire Company and the Salvation Army where he attended church regularly.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Josephine McDorman Miller.

Also surviving is a son, Dennis Miller and wife Lolly; brother, Robert Miller and wife Margie; grandchildren, Heidi Miller and husband Josh Padon, Wendy Miller and husband Drew Meyerhoeffer; two great-grandchildren, Holly Padon, Emerson “Emmy” Meyerhoeffer; and many beloved extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Ward.

Majors Alan and Kim Grimes will conduct a graveside service on Friday, September 4, 2026 at 4 p.m. at Clover Hill Cemetery.

The family will have a time of receiving friends and sharing memories on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at The Salvation Army of Harrisonburg Fellowship Hall, 185 Ashby Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA.
