Charles "Willard" Hertzler

Charles “Willard” Hertzler, 81, a resident of Rockingham, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at his home.

Willard was born on January 15, 1945 in Charlottesville, Virginia and was a son of the late Charles Wenger and Esther Rhoda Benner Hertzler.

He worked as a contractor prior to dedicating 27 years of service to Eastern Mennonite High School, where he worked as head of facilities. A gifted craftsman, he took pride in using his hands and talents to keep the school running smoothly. He was a jack of all trades and master of most. An avid outdoorsman, he found great enjoyment in hunting, fishing, archery and spending time in the woods at the family farm in Bergton. His faith was an important part of his life, and he was a longtime member of Lindale Mennonite Church. More recently, he attended Weavers Mennonite Church, where he continued his connection to the church community.

On October 1, 1966, he married Dorothy June Graber Hertzler who survives.

Also surviving are his children, Lori Hertzler Schrock and husband Bryan of Mt. Crawford, Craig Willard Hertzler of Harrisonburg; siblings, Bonita Hertzler Jantzi and husband John, Anita Hertzler Landes and husband Lynn, Suzie Hertzler and husband Henry Sgrecci; grandchildren, Jonathan Schrock and wife Emma Resto Schrock; sister-in-law, Betty Houder Hertzler; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Willard was preceded in death by a brother, Lowell Hertzler.

Pastors Curt Stutzman and John Jantzi will conduct a memorial service on Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 2 p.m. at Weavers Mennonite Church. The family will receive friends following the service at Shady Oak.
