The Reverend Carlson "Barney" Troutman Obituary (1928 - 2015)

The Rev. Carlson Bernard Troutman The Rev. C. Bernard "Barney" Troutman, aged 87, died peacefully on June 15, 2015 in Timberville, Virginia. Barney was born on March 14, 1928 to Zella Lippard and Nathan W. Troutman in Statesville, NC. His beloved wife of 66 years, Jenny Lind Hottle Troutman died 6 days earlier on June 9, 2015. They were married on June 12, 1949. Surviving are son Thomas C. Troutman, Sr. and daughter-in-law Penny Troutman of Charlottesville, VA, daughter Barbra T. Humphrey and son-in-law Robert F. Humphrey of Harrisonburg, VA, grandson Thomas C. Troutman, Jr. and Alexandra Solis of California, granddaughter Jill C. Humphrey and grand-son-in-law Johan Grimsrud of New York City, four great-grandchildren: Dylan and Layla of California; Elias and Marja of New York City; 10 Nieces and Nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. Pastor Troutman served four Lutheran Parishes in Virginia: Salem, Mt. Sidney '53-'58 and '87-'90; Holy Trinity, Martinsville '58-'60; Hebron & Mt. Nebo, Madison County '60-'70; Reformation, New Market '70-'87 where he was named "Pastor Emeritus." He served many other Valley churches as an interim and supply pastor during his retirement. He was well known for his commitment to the people and communities where he lived, helping to establish rescue squads in Madison and New Market. He was the Chaplain to the Virginia State Firefighters Association and at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital for decades. He helped create a counseling center, homeless shelter, low-income housing, support and 12-step groups. Barney had a beautiful baritone voice and sang in several choruses over the years including the Shenandoah Choral Society. His laughter, jokes, and personality filled any room, and he loved greeting folks while out and about. A funeral will be held at Muhlenberg Lutheran on Monday, June 22, 2015 at 11:00am, Bishop James F Mauney and Pastor Brett M. Davis officiating. Family will greet friends after the service.
