C.Leroy Thompson Obituary (1932 - 2013)

C. Leroy Thompson, Jr., 80 C. Leroy Thompson, Jr., 80, a resident of Harrisonburg, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2013. Mr. Thompson was born on April 18, 1932 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Carl Leroy and Mary Helen Scott Thompson. He graduated from Linville Edom High School and attended Shenandoah College where he received a degree in business. During his school years, he played basketball, and continued to play with the Rockingham County League for six years. He coached Little League baseball for more than twenty years. He served on the Rockingham County Parks & Recreation Board, the Rockingham Poultry Service Men's Organization, and was a proud member of the Linville-Edom Ruritans for sixty two years. He was also a member of the FFA. He served in the poultry industry for thirty eight years, and won many service awards. He presented a turkey to the president on behalf of the Virginia Poultry Federation. He worked for the Rockingham Group Insurance Company for seventeen years. Mr. Thompson loved to travel with family and friends, traveling to many places and especially enjoyed the Holy Land, Alaska and Florida. He was an avid supporter of the West Rockingham Food Pantry. He was a member of the Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church and attended Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the choir, taught Sunday School and served as a youth leader. On September 16, 1950, he married the love of his life, the former Rebecca Shifflett who survives. Also surviving are three children, Judy Langston and husband Odell of Williamsburg; Carl Leroy Thompson, III and wife Sue of Mayesville, West Virginia; Sharon Thompson Rexrode and husband Keith of Waynesboro; three brothers, Bruce Thompson of Midlothian; Thomas Thompson, Gainesville; Charles Thompson of Seaford; eight grandchildren, Cheri Snyder, Jeremy Turner, Kristin Thompson, Brooke Turner, Grant Langston, Shane Shaver, Jonathan Smith, and Christie Smith; ten great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Thompson. Dr. Gary A. Ziegler and the Reverend Dr. Jan G. Owen will conduct a funeral service on Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Greenmount Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday evening at the McMullen Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Linville Edom Ruritan Club, P.O.
