Austin Ray Scheermesser

Austin Ray Scheermesser, 88, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Saturday March 11, 2017 at Sentara RMH Medical Center.
Mr. Scheermesser was born on February 26, 1929 in Dayton, Ohio and was a son of the late Raymond and Winifred Justine (Knott) Scheermesser. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he worked for Westvaco for many years prior to his retirement. In his retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing, painting and woodworking. Austin attended Ray of Hope Pentecostal Church in Harrisonburg.
On December 22, 1954 he married the former Ada Lee "Bonnie" Howard who preceded him in death on July 20, 1979.
Austin is survived by his children, Craig Scheermesser and wife Sandy of Rockingham, Austine Friend and husband David of Edinburg, VA; twin brother Justin Scheermesser of Harrisonburg, VA, and brother Edward Scheermesser and wife Cindy of Westernport, MD; grandchildren, Jason Scheermesser and wife Sara of Bridgewater, April Pastucha and husband Dennis of York, PA, Andy Friend and wife Lauren of Harrisonburg, Adam Friend and wife Hannah of Bridgewater; five great-grandchildren; and his former wife Karen Vorhauer Mooney. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Scheermesser was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Lee Hartman.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday March 18, 2017 at 10 am at the McMullen Funeral Home, 5784 Greenmount Road, Harrisonburg, VA with Pastor Jimmy Kite officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 9 until 10 AM. The casket will remain closed.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday at the Bloomington Cemetery in Bloomington, Maryland at 3 PM.
